I’ve been following the production of this film for a few years now. The time has come. Bennett Miller’s Foxcatcher premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this past month and the praise was endless and still coming. Bennett Miller, who has previously received an Oscar nomination for directing Capote (Best Director, 2006), just walked away with the Best Director prize from Cannes this year.
The film is getting lauded by critics and audiences, both for work behind the camera and in front of the camera. Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo, and Steve Carell all deliver impressive turns. But it is Carell who seems to be making a huge impression in the industry with his portrayal of John du Pont; “…the movie derives its primary discomfiting power from Steve Carell in a revelatory performance as a monster of American wealth” (Eric Kohn, Indiewire- Cannes Review). Steve Carell could be looking at his first Oscar nomination. It just depends if he gets pushed for a Lead Actor bid or a Supporting Actor one.
This trailer that I’ve posted has such an overwhelming dread to it, that it is hard to think of any other American film that I’ve seen in the last couple of years that was able to conjure this type of feeling from just a trailer. Film advertising is key to a film’s success, so to all the people like me that didn’t see Foxcatcher at this years Cannes Film Festival, check this trailer out. Click on the title above. This may be the best film of the year.
